The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Segal Group of Companies, a multimodal logistics and shipping services provider, after one of its bulk carrier vessels allegedly damaged a passenger water transport terminal at Nerul jetty earlier this month.
Complaint Filed at NRI Coastal Police Station
The complaint was lodged on Monday by Cidco assistant executive engineer (Civil) Santosh Biradaar (44) at the NRI Coastal Police Station under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.
Incident Details
According to the FIR, the incident occurred on June 2 at approximately 1:30 pm when the vessel ‘SEA Gautam’, operated by Segal Group of Companies, was navigating near the jetty in Sector 23, Nerul. While passing the area, the vessel reportedly struck a corner of the Passenger Water Transport Terminal located behind the Tide canteen.
The collision caused significant damage to public infrastructure, including the jetty’s staircase, the polycarbonate roof covering the stairs, and 12 to 14 support poles holding up the structure. Cidco has estimated the losses at between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh.
Vessel Description and Aftermath
A Cidco official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the approximately 103-metre-long vessel was transporting dredged sand, iron ore, and coal at the time of the incident. Following the accident, authorities contacted representatives of the shipping company and directed the vessel to anchor near Targhar in the Ulwe node for two days while an inquiry was conducted. The official noted that the company’s headquarters are located in Gujarat, with regional offices in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
Cidco subsequently informed the firm’s Mumbai office about the damage and instructed it to undertake repair work and bear the associated costs. Company representatives were expected to inspect the damaged jetty on Monday to assess the extent of repairs required.
Legal Action Initiated
However, after receiving no response from the company, Cidco proceeded with registering an FIR against the firm, said officials. Police have initiated further investigation into the matter.
