Cigarette Ignites Fuel Nozzle at Raipur Petrol Pump, Swift Action Averts Disaster
A routine visit to a petrol pump in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, nearly escalated into a catastrophic fire incident on Thursday evening after a youth allegedly used a lighter to ignite a fuel nozzle in a fit of rage. The reckless act, triggered when he was asked not to smoke, resulted in flames engulfing a motorcycle and pump equipment, causing widespread panic at the site.
Incident Details and Immediate Aftermath
The alarming episode unfolded at a petrol pump located in the Urla area of Raipur. According to police reports, two individuals, identified as Dharmendra Kshatri and Imran, arrived at the facility on a motorcycle to refuel. While Imran remained seated on the bike, Dharmendra stood nearby as the fuel tank was opened.
In a dangerous move, Dharmendra reportedly took out a cigarette and attempted to light it. When pump staff instructed him to refrain from smoking due to the obvious fire hazard, he became enraged. Instead of complying, he allegedly used a lighter to set the fuel nozzle pipe ablaze, instantly triggering a fire.
The flames rapidly spread to the motorcycle's fuel tank and the pump machine, creating a scene of chaos and fear. Both accused individuals, along with the biker and pump staff, scrambled to safety as the fire intensified.
Heroic Response Prevents Catastrophe
Amid the panic, a quick-thinking pump attendant sprang into action, demonstrating remarkable presence of mind. The attendant promptly pulled away the fuel pipe and switched off the main fuel supply, cutting off the source of the fire. Utilizing the fire safety kit available at the pump, the staff managed to douse the flames in a timely manner.
This swift intervention was crucial in preventing what could have escalated into a major explosion or a devastating fire accident. Officials emphasized that the fire had the potential to spread to nearby vehicles and fuel storage areas, which could have resulted in significant damage and loss of life.
Arrests and Legal Action
During the chaotic incident, some burning fuel reportedly splashed onto the accused individuals. Following the extinguishing of the fire, the duo attempted to flee the scene but were apprehended by the vigilant pump staff. The staff immediately informed the police and lodged a formal complaint.
Urla police subsequently arrested both accused based on the complaint filed by the pump manager and corroborating CCTV footage from the site. Inspector Rohit Mahelkar of Urla police station confirmed that a case has been registered under sections related to arson and endangering public safety.
Police authorities praised the prompt response of the petrol pump employees, highlighting that their actions averted a potentially disastrous outcome. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols at fuel stations, where even a minor spark can lead to severe consequences.
