In a significant move to bolster law and order in a rapidly developing region, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday inaugurated a new police station for Neelambur in Coimbatore district. The inauguration was conducted via videoconferencing, marking the establishment of the 34th police station under the Coimbatore rural police jurisdiction.
Jurisdiction and Coverage of the New Station
The newly formed Neelambur police station has been created by reorganizing the jurisdictions of three existing stations. Five villages previously under Sulur, two from Annur, and one from Kovilpalayam police stations have been merged to form its new limits. Police sources confirmed that the station will have primary jurisdiction over eight mother villages: Muthukavundanpudur, Neelambur, Rasipalayam, Mayilampatti, Arasur, Vellanaipatti, and Naranapuram. In addition, it will cover 23 hamlet villages in the surrounding area.
Personnel and Infrastructure Plans
The station will be staffed by a team of 50 police personnel. This contingent will be led by an inspector of police and will include three sub-inspectors to assist in operations and investigations. Regarding infrastructure, officials stated that two potential sites have been identified for the permanent police station building—one each in Arasur and Neelambur. The final site selection will be made by the government.
Until the permanent structure is ready, the Neelambur police station will operate from a temporary building located in Sangothipalayam. This interim arrangement ensures that policing services for the newly carved jurisdiction begin without delay.
Addressing the Need for Local Policing
The establishment of this police station addresses a critical gap in local policing. Areas like Neelambur and Arasur have seen rapid growth due to the development of numerous residential projects. Previously, these areas fell under the Sulur police station, whose personnel had to travel distances of 15 to 18 kilometers to attend to cases and complaints.
This geographical challenge often led to delays in response times. Police sources highlighted that many crimes have been reported from Neelambur in recent times, underscoring the urgent need for a dedicated police presence closer to the community. The new station is expected to drastically improve response efficiency and enhance preventive policing in the locality.
The virtual inauguration event was attended by Inspector General of Police (West Zone) T Senthil Kumar and Coimbatore Superintendent of Police K Karthikeyan, among other officials.
