Violence erupted in Kerala after Enforcement Directorate (ED) searches, linked to the Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) money laundering case, triggered protests outside the residence of former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The ED conducted raids as part of an investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving Exalogic Solutions Private Limited, a company owned by Vijayan's daughter, Veena Vijayan.
Protests and Violence
CPI(M) workers allegedly hurled stones, helmets, and bottles at ED officials during the searches. An ED vehicle was attacked, and its windshield was shattered. The protests later spread to Delhi, where CPI(M) leaders, led by M. A. Baby, demonstrated outside the ED headquarters, alleging political targeting.
Allegations and Investigation
The controversy centres on allegations that Exalogic Solutions received payments from CMRL without rendering any services. The ED is probing whether these transactions constitute proceeds of crime under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Pinarayi Vijayan himself has not been named as an accused in the case.
The ED's actions have sparked a political firestorm, with the CPI(M) accusing the central government of using investigative agencies to target opposition leaders. The case continues to unfold, with further investigations expected.
