A 47-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday in Coimbatore for allegedly murdering his neighbour, a 72-year-old woman, following a dispute over dumping garbage in the common area of their rental house.
Arrest and Identification
The Karunya Nagar police identified the accused as E Noble Watson Thangadurai, a native of Kanyakumari district. Unmarried and unemployed, Thangadurai had been residing in a rented house on Sappanimadai Road in Karunya Nagar for the past seven years.
Background of the Dispute
According to police officials, there had been frequent verbal altercations between Thangadurai and the victim, V Jessy Vincent, over the dumping of garbage in the common area of the compound where both lived as tenants.
On Wednesday around 8 am, the two engaged in yet another argument. During the spat, Jessy reportedly used abusive language against Thangadurai's mother. Enraged by this, Thangadurai fetched a sickle from his house and struck Jessy on the head. The elderly woman sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.
Legal Proceedings
Upon receiving information, the Karunya Nagar police registered a case and arrested Thangadurai. He was produced before a court and subsequently remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday night. The body of the deceased was sent to a government hospital for postmortem examination.
Family of the Victim
Jessy is survived by two sons and a daughter, who is settled in the United States. Her elder son serves as a church reverend, while her younger son resides in Coimbatore city.
This tragic incident highlights how a seemingly minor dispute over garbage can escalate into a fatal confrontation. The police have urged residents to resolve conflicts amicably and report any serious issues to authorities.
