Coimbatore Police Crack Down on Crime with Externment Orders for 29 Offenders

In a decisive move to enhance public safety, the Coimbatore city police have served externment orders to 29 habitual offenders, compelling them to remain outside the city limits for the next six months. City Police Commissioner N Kannan issued these orders as part of a strategic initiative to curb criminal activities and maintain law and order in the region.

Details of the Externment Initiative

According to police officials, personnel from various police stations across Coimbatore were instructed to compile comprehensive reports on repeat offenders. These reports were then submitted to senior officers for review. Based on this meticulous documentation, 29 individuals were identified as habitual offenders and subsequently summoned by the police.

On Saturday, the police explained the externment orders to these offenders under Section 51A of the Madras City Police Act and provided them with official copies of the directives. The orders strictly prohibit the offenders from entering Coimbatore city for the specified six-month period, aiming to disrupt their criminal networks and reduce recidivism.

Historical Context and Impact on Crime Rates

This is not the first time such measures have been implemented in Coimbatore. Police sources revealed that on January 13 last year, externment orders were issued to 27 people for the first time in the city, under the then Commissioner A Saravana Sundar. In April of the same year, the number escalated to 83 individuals being externed.

To date, a total of 184 people have been issued externment orders under Section 51A of the Act. The police have emphasized that the consistent invocation of this legal provision has played a significant role in reducing the overall crime rate in Coimbatore over the past year. By removing habitual offenders from the city environment, authorities aim to create a safer community and deter future criminal behavior.

Police Strategy and Future Plans

The Coimbatore police have adopted a proactive approach, focusing on data-driven strategies to identify and manage repeat offenders. This externment drive is part of a broader effort to strengthen crime prevention mechanisms and ensure swift justice. Officials have stated that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and may issue further orders as needed to maintain public order.

Residents have welcomed this move, expressing hope for improved security and a decline in criminal incidents. The police urge the public to cooperate by reporting any suspicious activities, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding the city.
