Coimbatore Police Launches Major Pre-Election Security Operation
In a significant move to ensure public safety ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections, the Coimbatore city police initiated a comprehensive 'Area Domination Exercise' on Sunday morning. This strategic security operation is designed to establish a strong police presence, deter criminal activities, and enhance confidence among residents during the critical election period.
What is an Area Domination Exercise?
An area domination exercise is a proactive security measure involving high-visibility patrolling, route marches, and intensive surveillance by security forces, including police, paramilitary, or army units. The primary objectives are to assert authority, improve public safety, and create a deterrent effect against potential criminal or militant threats. Such exercises are often deployed in sensitive times, such as elections, to maintain law and order.
Scale and Scope of the Operation
The exercise in Coimbatore was conducted on a large scale, involving as many as 450 police personnel. This force included two deputy commissioners, 18 inspectors, and support from paramilitary units. Teams raided multiple locations across the city, targeting areas known for potential security risks.
- Locations Searched: Bachelor accommodations, private mansions, lodges, bus stands, and railway stations were thoroughly inspected.
- Arrests and Detentions: A total of 21 individuals were apprehended for possession of ganja. Additionally, three history-sheeters who were violating externment orders and one category A rowdy who had been evading authorities were found and taken into custody.
- Contraband Seizures: Police seized 800 grams of ganja along with rolling papers from college students. They also confiscated 127 bottles of liquor originating from Maharashtra and a quantity of lottery tickets.
Additional Security Measures
Beyond the raids, the police implemented stringent vehicle checks as part of the exercise. During these inspections, 14 suspicious two-wheelers were impounded for further investigation. To aid in solving past crimes, fingerprints were collected from 15 individuals deemed suspicious. These prints have been sent to the fingerprint bureau for cross-referencing with unsolved cases, potentially linking suspects to previous offenses.
Future Plans and Public Assurance
The Coimbatore city police have announced that similar area domination exercises will be conducted periodically in the lead-up to the election cycle. This ongoing effort aims to maintain robust law and order, prevent electoral malpractices, and build public confidence. By demonstrating a visible and active police presence, authorities hope to reassure citizens and deter any disruptive elements during this politically sensitive time.
The exercise underscores the police's commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for voters and candidates alike, as the state prepares for the democratic process of assembly elections.
