Major Crackdown on Toxic Cow Dung Powder in Coimbatore
In a significant operation on Thursday, the Coimbatore city police confiscated approximately 250.07 kilograms of hazardous yellow cow dung powder from six different shops across the city. This chemical-laden substance, which contains dangerous compounds like auramine, has been identified as a primary factor in numerous poisoning-related fatalities due to its extreme toxicity.
Rising Suicide Cases Prompt Police Action
The police raid was initiated in response to a sudden and alarming increase in suicide incidents involving the consumption of cow dung powder within Coimbatore and its surrounding areas. As authorities delved into their investigation, they uncovered a network of shops in Variety Hall that were distributing the powder in large quantities to various retail outlets throughout the city.
During the crackdown, law enforcement officers conducted raids on multiple establishments, successfully seizing the illicit cow dung powder from six specific shops. In connection with these findings, cases have been officially registered against twelve individuals involved in the distribution and sale of the toxic material.
Legal and Health Implications
It is strictly illegal to stockpile any product that poses a threat to human life without proper authorization. A police spokesperson emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "We conducted raids on more than ten shops, and our objective is to ensure that cow dung powder is completely unavailable in the market. Its easy accessibility has led to numerous tragic incidents, including accidental consumption by children and intentional use by individuals attempting suicide."
The chemical cow dung powder, which is commonly found in the Coimbatore-Erode region, represents a critical public health hazard. Authorities are now intensifying their efforts to eradicate its availability and prevent further loss of life.
