Coimbatore Police Launch Investigation into 5.2 Lakh Night Bus Robbery

City police in Coimbatore have initiated a detailed investigation into a significant robbery case where a trader was robbed of 5.2 lakh rupees during a night bus journey on February 18. The incident has highlighted vulnerabilities in long-distance travel and prompted swift police action following the victim's persistent efforts to report the crime.

Details of the Robbery Incident

The victim, identified as P Ravi, aged 50, from Nallampalayam, was traveling to Coimbatore from Pudukottai on a bus when the theft occurred. Ravi, who operates a business selling mobile phone cases, is currently constructing a house in the city. To fund this project, he had recently pledged his wife's jewellery in his hometown and was returning with the cash proceeds.

During the journey, Ravi placed a bag containing the cash on the overhead rack above his seat. He disembarked at the Gandhipuram bus stand around 4:45 AM on February 19. Upon attempting to open the bag, he discovered that someone had applied superglue to the zipper, preventing access. After obtaining a knife from a nearby bakery to cut open the bag, he was shocked to find all the cash missing.

Police Response and Investigation Challenges

Ravi immediately approached the Kattoor police station on the same day to file a complaint. However, he was directed to the Ottanchathiram police station, as initial suspicions indicated the theft might have occurred when he got down for refreshments at that location. This jurisdictional issue delayed the formal registration of the case.

Undeterred, Ravi submitted a petition to Coimbatore City Police Commissioner N Kannan on Wednesday, detailing the incident and the obstacles faced. Commissioner Kannan promptly intervened, directing the Kattoor police to register a case and commence an investigation. Authorities are now examining CCTV footage, interviewing bus passengers and staff, and exploring leads to identify the perpetrators.

Broader Implications and Safety Concerns

This robbery underscores the risks associated with carrying large sums of money on public transport, especially during night travels. Police have advised citizens to exercise caution, use secure banking methods for transactions, and remain vigilant with their belongings. The case has also raised questions about the efficiency of initial police responses in handling such incidents.

Further investigation is ongoing, with police focusing on forensic evidence and witness accounts to solve the crime. Updates will be provided as the probe progresses, aiming to bring the culprits to justice and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
