Tragic Fire Accident Claims Life of Elderly Woman in Coimbatore

A devastating incident unfolded in Coimbatore over the weekend, resulting in the death of an elderly woman after her clothes caught fire while she was performing a religious ritual. The Peelamedu police have identified the deceased as B Nirmala, aged 69, a resident of VKR Nagar near Peelamedu.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy

According to police reports, the incident occurred on Saturday morning. Nirmala and her husband, Balraj, had gone out for their routine morning walk. Upon returning, Nirmala informed her husband that she was heading home to light a lamp in the puja room, a common daily practice in many households.

Balraj followed shortly after, but as he approached their residence, he was met with harrowing screams emanating from inside the house. Rushing in with the help of neighbors, they discovered Nirmala engulfed in flames, suffering from severe burn injuries across her body.

"They immediately poured water to extinguish the flames and managed to rescue her," a police officer stated, detailing the frantic rescue efforts.

Medical Treatment and Fatal Outcome

Nirmala was swiftly admitted to a private hospital for emergency care. Despite receiving medical attention, her condition remained critical due to the extensive burns. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, without responding to treatment.

Police Investigation and Preliminary Findings

The Peelamedu police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by Balraj and have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the fire ignited when Nirmala's clothing accidentally came into contact with the lit lamp as she was carrying it to the puja room.

This incident highlights the potential dangers associated with traditional practices involving open flames, especially for elderly individuals. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and consider safety measures when performing such rituals to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
