College Student Held for Taking Bribe for Mother in Surat

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Surat made a significant arrest on Friday, apprehending a 19-year-old college student for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 on behalf of his mother, Rupal Tailor. Tailor serves as a senior accountant in the agriculture division of the Surat District Panchayat.

Details of the Bribery Case

According to officials, the trap was set following a complaint about an alleged demand for illegal gratification to clear pending Transport Allowance (TA) and Leave Travel Concession (LTC) bills of employees for the years 2022 to 2024. The ACB stated that Tailor, a Class 3 officer, had allegedly demanded Rs 1,500 each from 33 employees for TA bills and Rs 1,000 each from 13 employees for LTC bills, totaling Rs 62,500.

Execution of the Trap

As part of the operation, the complainant informed Tailor that Rs 30,000 had been arranged. She then instructed the complainant to deliver the money near Omkar Heights on Ugat-Bhesan Road in Jahangirabad. Investigators revealed that Tailor allegedly sent her son, Jeel Tailor, a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) student, to collect the bribe while she remained at a nearby residence. ACB officials caught Jeel red-handed on a public road while accepting the bribe amount.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Following Jeel's arrest, ACB teams reached Tailor's residence, where she was detained for further procedure. She will be formally arrested after the completion of legal formalities. The operation was led by Police Inspector K J Dhaduk under the supervision of Assistant Director R R Chaudhary of the ACB Surat unit.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of the ACB to curb corruption in government departments. It also underscores the involvement of family members in corrupt practices, which is a growing concern for law enforcement agencies.
