Colva police have arrested Delroy Fernandes, a 21-year-old resident of Benaulim, for allegedly assaulting his cousin multiple times in a single day, causing significant injuries. The arrest follows a complaint lodged by the victim, Calvin Fernandes, detailing two separate incidents of violence.
First Incident at Sernabatim Beach
According to the complaint, the first attack occurred on the evening of April 25 at Sernabatim beach. Calvin alleged that Delroy, whose parents serve as panchayat members in Benaulim, approached him and choked his neck while issuing death threats against both Calvin and his mother. The victim managed to escape but reported the incident to the police.
Second Assault at Home
The situation escalated later that day when Calvin returned to his residence. Delroy, accompanied by an unidentified individual, allegedly assaulted him again. The accused reportedly slapped and punched Calvin, pushed his head against a metal grill, and threw him to the ground. The attack left the victim with visible injuries.
When Calvin's mother, Bernandina Silva, intervened to protect her son, Delroy allegedly turned on her. Police reports indicate that he abused her verbally, pulled her hair, and pushed her to the ground. Authorities have classified this act as assault on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, a serious offense under Indian law.
Legal Charges Filed
Based on the complaint and evidence, Colva police have registered multiple offenses against Delroy Fernandes. These include voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, intentional insult, unlawful assembly, rioting, wrongful confinement, and assault on a woman. The accused has been taken into custody and is currently being held for further investigation.
Police officials confirmed that the accused's parents are local panchayat members, but stated that the investigation will proceed without any bias. The victim and his mother have been provided with necessary support and protection.
This incident has drawn attention to the issue of domestic violence and the importance of swift police action in such cases. Authorities urge anyone facing similar threats or assaults to report them immediately to local law enforcement.
