Couple Jumps into Bagmati River After Argument

Tragic Incident at Dumri Ghat Bridge

A distressing incident unfolded at Dumri Ghat bridge in Khagaria district on Thursday evening when a married couple, identified as Rupesh Kumar and his wife Manas Devi, jumped into the Bagmati river following a heated argument. The couple, both residents of Telihar, have not been traced despite an extensive search operation conducted by police and professional divers.

Eyewitness Accounts and Rescue Challenges

According to eyewitnesses present at the scene, the couple was seen arguing intensely on the bridge before taking the drastic step. Shockingly, they jumped from opposite ends of the bridge—one from the east side and the other from the west side—into the river below. The strong currents in the Bagmati river at that location significantly hampered immediate rescue efforts, making it difficult for responders to locate them quickly.

The incident drew a large crowd of local residents who gathered at the spot, creating a chaotic situation. Police teams from Beldaur and Chautham stations promptly arrived at the scene upon receiving information. They managed the crowd and traffic effectively while launching a coordinated search operation with the assistance of divers.

Ongoing Police Investigation and Search

Station House Officer of Chautham police station, Ajeet Kumar, provided details about the ongoing efforts. "One of them jumped from the east-end of the bridge while the other jumped from the west-end," he stated. The rescue operation, which continued throughout Thursday evening, will resume on Friday as the couple remains untraceable. The police are treating this as a critical missing persons case and are exploring all avenues to locate Rupesh Kumar and Manas Devi.

The community in Khagaria district has been left in shock by this tragic event. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in the investigation. The search operation highlights the challenges faced by emergency responders in river rescue scenarios, particularly when dealing with strong currents and limited visibility.
