Karti Chidambaram's Chinese Visa Case: Court Frames Charges, Trial Jan 16
Court frames charges against Karti Chidambaram in visa case

A Delhi court has formally framed charges against Congress Member of Parliament Karti Chidambaram in a high-profile corruption case linked to the facilitation of visas for Chinese nationals. The court has set January 16, 2026 as the date for the commencement of the trial.

The Core Allegations and Court Proceedings

Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh at the Rouse Avenue Courts on Tuesday framed charges against Karti Chidambaram and six other co-accused. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that the politician played a key role in influencing the grant of visas for approximately 250 Chinese nationals back in 2011.

In return for this facilitation, a bribe of Rs 50 lakh was allegedly demanded and accepted. The court's decision to proceed with the trial was significantly influenced by the statements of an approver in the case, a key witness who has turned against the other accused.

The Money Trail and Project Link

The CBI's charge sheet outlines a specific money trail. The alleged bribe amount was paid by Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), a company that required the Chinese workers for its power projects. TSPL reportedly paid the Rs 50 lakh to a firm named Bell Tools Limited.

Investigators claim this money was then transferred to Bhaskararaman, described as an aide who was acting on behalf of Karti Chidambaram. The visas for the Chinese nationals were allegedly expedited through this arrangement during the Congress-led UPA government's tenure.

Next Steps and Legal Stand

With the charges now framed, the stage is set for a full trial. Karti Chidambaram has entered a plea of not guilty, denying all allegations against him. The legal process will involve the examination of witnesses and evidence presented by the CBI when the court reconvenes on January 16 next year.

This case adds to the legal challenges facing the Congress MP and is being closely watched in political and legal circles. The framing of charges is a critical step where the court finds sufficient prima facie evidence to proceed with a trial against the accused.
