An Amritsar court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with the Majitha police station confrontation case. Majithia was accused of tearing documents inside the police station and attempting to free one of his supporters, Jobanpreet Singh.
Details of the Case
The First Information Report (FIR) against Majithia and others was registered on May 31. Following the registration, police conducted continuous raids in an attempt to arrest him. The case stems from an incident where Majithia allegedly tore documents and tried to secure the release of Jobanpreet Singh, who was in police custody.
Reaction from SAD
SAD chief spokesperson and advocate Arshdeep Singh Kaler criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government after the court relief. He stated, "Court decisions are based on evidence, not on statements made by a chief minister." Kaler added that while Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had previously made grand claims about the case, it remains to be seen how he will respond now.
Kaler further explained that Majithia had only gone to the police station to participate in a protest staged by Jobanpreet's family and a farmer union demanding his release. He highlighted that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had already termed Jobanpreet Singh's arrest unconstitutional and unethical.
Background
The confrontation at the Majitha police station occurred when Majithia and his supporters arrived to protest the detention of Jobanpreet Singh. The situation escalated, leading to the allegations of document tearing and attempted forceful release. The anticipatory bail provides temporary relief to Majithia, who can now avoid arrest pending further legal proceedings.
This development marks a significant turn in the ongoing political tussle between the ruling AAP and the opposition SAD in Punjab. The case has drawn attention due to the involvement of a prominent political figure and the high-profile nature of the allegations.
