A court in Thiruvananthapuram has ordered further investigation against E P Jayarajan in a case involving allegations that Youth Congress workers, including Farzeen Majeed, were assaulted aboard a flight during a protest against former chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The direction was issued by the Thiruvananthapuram first class judicial magistrate court after Majeed challenged a police report that had effectively closed the case against the CPM senior functionary.
According to court records, Majeed had lodged a complaint alleging that Jayarajan assaulted him while he was protesting against the then CM. However, the police subsequently informed the court that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegation and filed a report recommending closure of the case.
Following Majeed’s petition, the magistrate court directed the Valiyathura station house officer to conduct a detailed further investigation. The court instructed the police to examine all available evidence, including CCTV footage, and submit a comprehensive report.
The incident occurred aboard an IndiGo flight E-7407 from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram on June 13, 2022. Based on a complaint filed by Jayarajan, who was travelling on the same flight along with Pinarayi, Valiyathura police registered a case of attempted murder against Majeed, Naveen Kumar, Sudheep James and former Youth Congress vice-president K S Sabarinadhan. Meanwhile, Majeed and Kumar maintained that they had only raised slogans inside the aircraft and alleged that it was Jayarajan who had physically attacked them.
The court’s latest order requires the police to re-examine the allegations and evidence related to the complaint against Jayarajan and submit a fresh report.
