Court Sentences Four for Attempted Murder of Daughter-in-Law

A sessions court in Ahmedabad on Monday sentenced four members of a family to three years of imprisonment for attempting to murder their daughter-in-law by forcibly administering poison, subjecting her to domestic violence, and demanding dowry.

According to the prosecution, the woman married a resident of Nana Chiloda in 2007. The couple had a daughter in 2010. In November 2012, her father filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Sardarnagar police station against her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law after the woman was hospitalized following the poisoning incident.

Following an investigation, the police charged the four accused with cruelty, dowry demands, and attempted murder. The couple separated in 2017, and the man remarried in 2018.

During the trial, Additional Public Prosecutor Ajay Trivedi examined 18 witnesses and presented documentary evidence to establish the guilt of all four accused.

While sentencing, the court observed: “Considering the seriousness of the situation and the circumstances of the case, it is not deemed appropriate to release the accused on probation. However, taking into account the financial records and the evidence presented by the complainant, it is noted that during the marriage, the accused demanded Rs 3 lakh in cash from the victim. Unable to fulfill this demand, the accused conspired together, subjected the victim to cruelty, and with the intention of causing harm or potentially leading to the victim’s death, administered a poisonous substance. As a result, the victim and her daughter had to undergo prolonged treatment at the civil hospital.”
