A man with a criminal record was shot dead in the Khajuri Khas area of Northeast Delhi late Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Ravi Kumar, a resident of the same locality. According to police officials, Kumar was standing outside his house when two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle fired multiple shots at him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police Investigation Underway
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey said that a team has been formed to investigate the murder. "Preliminary investigation suggests that the victim had a criminal background and was involved in several cases of extortion and assault. We are examining CCTV footage from the area and questioning local residents to identify the attackers," Tirkey added.
Criminal History of the Victim
Ravi Kumar had a long history of criminal activities. According to police records, he was involved in at least half a dozen cases, including robbery, extortion, and causing grievous hurt. He was also arrested in 2023 for his alleged involvement in a murder case but was later released on bail. Locals described him as a "dreaded figure" in the area, often involved in disputes and illegal activities.
"He used to extort money from local shopkeepers and was feared by many. However, no one expected such a brazen attack in a residential area," said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous.
Possible Motive
Police are exploring multiple angles, including personal enmity and gang rivalry. "Kumar had several enemies due to his criminal activities. We are also looking into whether this was a result of a recent dispute or a targeted attack by a rival gang," a senior police officer said. The assailants fired at least five rounds before fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made so far.
Security Measures
Following the incident, police have increased patrolling in the Khajuri Khas area and set up checkpoints to nab the culprits. "We are committed to solving this case at the earliest. The public is requested to share any information that could help in the investigation," the DCP added. The body has been sent for postmortem, and further legal proceedings are underway.
This is the second such incident in the area in the past month. In April, a man was stabbed to death in a nearby locality over a property dispute. Residents have expressed concerns over the rising crime rate in the region.
