CRPF Jawan Injured in IED Blast During Extended Anti-Naxal Operation in Saranda Forest

In a significant development in the ongoing security operation in Jharkhand, a CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) jawan was injured on Thursday following an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in the dense Saranda forest region of West Singhbhum district. This incident occurred as security forces engaged in a protracted gun battle with Maoist guerrillas for the second consecutive day, aiming to flush out Naxal elements from the area.

Details of the IED Incident and Ongoing Conflict

The explosion took place on Thursday morning near Baliba village, located under the jurisdiction of the Chotanagra police station. Security personnel, who were actively confronting the outlawed Maoist group, encountered the IED during their operations. The injured jawan has been identified as Abhinav Kumar from the 210 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He sustained bodily injuries upon contact with the explosive device and was promptly provided first-aid at a local camp before being air-lifted to Ranchi for advanced medical treatment.

Superintendent of Police Amit Renu confirmed the ongoing operation, stating, "We are still fighting the gun-battle, details could be shared once the operation ends." Intermittent firing has been reported from both sides throughout the second day, indicating the intensity of the conflict.

Background of the Operation and Previous Casualties

This latest incident follows a similar occurrence on Wednesday, where five security personnel, including Inspector Satya Prakash of the 205 Battalion, were injured in an IED blast and subsequent exchange of gunfire. The security forces have reportedly surrounded Baliba, effectively cornering the Maoists in this hilly terrain, which is known as one of the safe havens for Naxalites within the deep Saranda forest.

The operation was initiated on Wednesday after multiple security agencies, including district police, received intelligence regarding the movement of Misir Besra, a senior politburo member of the Maoist outfit who carries a reward of Rs 1 crore. Besra was allegedly guiding his squad to a safer location when security forces raided the area, leading to unprovoked firing by the Naxalites in an attempt to neutralize the advancing personnel.

Strategic Approach and Future Expectations

In a statement to a local channel in Ranchi, police spokesperson Micheal Raj outlined the dual strategy being employed by the authorities. "We are working on two-pronged strategy — one to make them surrender or eliminate them. We are also in touch with some rebels’ families for laying arms. We are also expecting that Misir and his squad will surrender soon," he said. Raj expressed optimism about achieving favorable results as security forces launch a final assault to clear the area of rebels.

The operation underscores the persistent challenges faced by security forces in combating left-wing extremism in regions like West Singhbhum, with ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and restore normalcy in the affected areas.
