Crude Bomb Explosions Shake Kolkata's Gangulypara Neighborhood
Kolkata: The quiet morning hours in Gangulypara, a residential area within Paikpara, were violently disrupted on Saturday as a series of crude bombs detonated on the premises of an abandoned club. The explosions, occurring in rapid succession, sent shockwaves through the community, shattering the peace of the neighborhood and raising immediate security concerns.
Residents Awakened by Loud Blasts and Fire
Residents reported being jolted from sleep around 6:10 am by the sound of loud explosions. "I startled out of sleep amid a loud explosion. At first, I thought it was construction noise from a nearby building project, but within seconds, a second blast occurred. I rushed out and saw the club was on fire," recounted Rahul Rakshit, a local resident. The blasts were powerful enough to blow off the club's tin roof, which landed on the terrace of a neighboring six-story building, while windowpanes in adjacent apartments vibrated violently.
Initial confusion gave way to alarm as residents realized the source of the disturbance. "We thought it was a cylinder explosion, but when we stepped out, we saw round objects stacked together—I realized those were bombs. I was scared as my house is just a stone's throw away," Rakshit added. A fire quickly broke out on the club premises, prompting residents to attempt to control it with water until firefighters arrived.
Police and Forensic Teams Launch Swift Investigation
Responding swiftly, police from the Chitpore Police Station, along with the detective department's bomb and dog squads and the fire department, converged on the scene. Authorities recovered approximately six crude bombs from the Yuva Shakti Club, along with chemicals stored in two bottles. While residents claimed at least three bombs exploded at intervals of five to ten seconds, police officials stated that only one or two devices had detonated.
With state assembly elections looming just weeks away, law enforcement acted promptly, deploying specialized units to probe the incident. Footage from all CCTV cameras in the vicinity is being meticulously scanned, and a forensic analysis of both the exploded and unexploded bombs is awaited. No injuries were reported, but the psychological impact on the community has been significant.
Land Development Dispute Suspected as Motive
The club has reportedly been deserted for about seven months, with members alleging they were pressured and threatened to vacate the premises. Srabani Banerjee, president of the Yuva Shakti Club, expressed shock over the incident. "We are shaken. As the explosion rang through the air, we went out to see the club on fire, enveloped in smoke. We called the police, and soon, the bomb squad arrived," she said.
Banerjee claimed that kerosene oil was stored on the club premises and suggested that the rear wall, which is weak, was breached by intruders who left the bombs behind. "This explosion was an act of settling personal scores, as there is an attempt to promote this club for development. Several people are involved, but I won't name them," she asserted, highlighting a pattern of threats, thefts, and vandalism.
Residents suspect that criminals entered the compound by breaching the back wall and left the explosives there, possibly to be used in conflicts over developing the valuable land. Tapan Guha, another long-time resident, shared his fear: "My mother, who lives elsewhere, called me in a panic. I still can't believe bombs went off and several others were found stacked up in our peaceful neighborhood, where I have been living for decades."
Community on Edge Amid Ongoing Probe
The incident has left the Gangulypara community on edge, with many pointing out that the property has been neglected and vulnerable. Previous thefts at the club had not been perceived as a security hazard, but the discovery of crude bombs has drastically changed that perception. Police are investigating the case from all angles, including potential links to land disputes and criminal activities.
As the investigation continues, residents remain vigilant, hoping for swift justice and enhanced security measures to prevent such alarming events in the future. The blasts serve as a stark reminder of the tensions that can arise in urban areas over property and development, especially in the charged atmosphere preceding elections.
