Coastal Security Group Thwarts Major Smuggling Bid in Ramanathapuram

In a significant crackdown on illicit activities, the Coastal Security Group (CSG) successfully foiled a massive smuggling attempt in the early hours of Monday, seizing a diverse haul of contraband, including ganja and turmeric, at Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district.

Intelligence-Led Operation Leads to Interception

According to police sources, acting on specific intelligence regarding the movement of illegal goods to Sri Lanka, a special team was mobilized under the instruction of Additional Superintendent of Police Balakrishnan. The team intercepted a mini-lorry at T Nagar near Mandapam at around 5 am, just as the suspects were unloading the cargo into a private warehouse from the vehicle.

Police moved in swiftly, but the suspects took advantage of the darkness and evaded capture. However, authorities successfully apprehended the driver of the mini-lorry and the person who was inside the warehouse at the time of the raid.

Massive Stockpile of Contraband Seized

Further investigation and seizure by police revealed a substantial stockpile intended for smuggling to Sri Lanka. The haul included:

  • 2,080 kg of turmeric
  • 958 cartons of cigarettes
  • 308 kg of coal
  • 100 bundles of beedis
  • 2.2 kg of ganja

Additionally, officials recovered 56 litres and 119 packets of pesticides, 10.45 kg of cardamom, and 60 kg of turmeric powder, highlighting the diverse nature of the smuggling operation.

Ongoing Investigations and Security Measures

The arrested individuals are currently being interrogated to gather more details about the smuggling network and its operations. A manhunt has been launched to track down the individuals who fled the spot, with police intensifying efforts to bring them to justice.

In response to this incident, coastal security has been further intensified across Ramanathapuram district. Authorities aim to pre-empt further smuggling attempts, particularly during the summer months when such activities tend to increase due to favorable weather conditions.

This operation underscores the vigilance and effectiveness of the Coastal Security Group in combating illegal trade and ensuring the security of coastal regions. The seizure of such a large quantity of contraband is expected to disrupt smuggling channels and serve as a deterrent to future attempts.
