The Cyberabad police have successfully dismantled a gang that posed as police officers to extort money from businessmen in the region. The arrest came after an extensive investigation into complaints filed by several victims who reported being threatened and coerced into paying large sums of money by individuals claiming to be law enforcement officials.
Gang's Modus Operandi
The gang operated by targeting wealthy businessmen and threatening them with fabricated legal cases. The fake cops would approach their victims, often at their places of business or residences, and demand money in exchange for not filing false charges. The victims, fearing legal trouble, complied with the demands.
Meeting in Prison
During interrogation, the accused confessed that they had first met while serving time in prison. Upon their release, they decided to form a gang and use their knowledge of police procedures to execute the extortion scheme. The group had been active for several months before being caught.
The police have recovered fake uniforms, identification cards, and other paraphernalia used by the gang to impersonate officers. They are now investigating whether the gang had any accomplices within the system or if they acted entirely independently.
The Cyberabad police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals claiming to be police officers. They have also set up a dedicated helpline for victims to come forward and provide information.
