Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Sunday that the state government will seek the death penalty for the accused in the horrific rape and murder of a child in Pune district. The case will be fast-tracked to ensure swift justice, Fadnavis said.
Arrest Made in Bhor Tehsil Incident
A 65-year-old man with a prior criminal record was arrested on May 1 for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing a child in Bhor tehsil of Pune district. The incident occurred on May 1, and the accused was taken into custody shortly after. The child's body was found in a secluded area, sparking outrage across the state.
Government's Firm Stance
Speaking to reporters, CM Fadnavis condemned the crime as heinous and assured that the government would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the strictest punishment. We will demand the death penalty for the accused, and the trial will be conducted on a fast-track basis, he stated. The state government has also directed the police to strengthen the case with forensic evidence and witness testimony.
The opposition has criticized the government's handling of law and order, but Fadnavis dismissed the allegations, saying that the arrest was made swiftly and the legal process would be expedited. Justice for the victim is our top priority, he added.
Background of the Accused
According to police records, the accused had been previously convicted in multiple cases of theft and assault. He was living alone in the area and had been under surveillance for suspicious behavior. The child, aged six, went missing on May 1, and a massive search operation led to the discovery of the body later that day.
The case has reignited debates on child safety and the effectiveness of the criminal justice system. Activists have called for stricter implementation of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and harsher penalties for repeat offenders.
Fast-Track Trial Process
The Maharashtra government has requested the court to set up a special fast-track court for the trial. This will involve daily hearings and a timeline of 60 days for the verdict. The prosecution will present evidence from medical reports, DNA analysis, and CCTV footage from the area.
CM Fadnavis also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the victim's family and assured them of full support. We stand with the family in this tragic moment, he said.
