Nashik: The decomposed body of an unidentified woman was found stuffed inside a luggage bag, along a road adjacent to the Godavari river in the Tapovan area of Nashik, on Tuesday morning. The police have registered a murder case.
The body, concealed inside a black suitcase and dumped by the roadside, was first spotted around 9am by a sanitation worker who noticed a strong foul smell while cleaning the stretch. DCP (Zone 1) Monica Raut said, “The body was decomposed, making it difficult to determine the cause of death immediately. The postmortem report is awaited.”
The police said the sanitation worker initially grew suspicious due to the unusual weight of the bag when he attempted to lift it, and promptly alerted authorities by dialling the 112 emergency helpline.
Following the alert, Adgaon’s senior inspector Sanjay Pise visited the spot with other senior officers, a dog squad and a forensic team, launching a detailed investigation.
The police said the body of the woman, who appears to be aged around 30, had been wrapped inside a grain sack before being tightly packed into the bag.
The woman was wearing a green Punjabi kurta with black pants and a wristwatch. A key identifying mark is a distinctive four-to-five-inch tattoo of a trishul with the word “Om” inscribed in Devanagari on her left hand. The police have started efforts to establish her identity, reaching out to stations across Nashik city, district and adjoining regions to match missing person complaints.
Officers are also scanning CCTV footage from nearby routes to trace the movement of the bag and identify those responsible for dumping it.
The police said identifying the woman remains crucial to cracking the case, as it is expected to provide the first breakthrough in tracking down the killer.
