Acid Attack Shatters Wedding Preparations in Delhi's Indira Vihar
In a narrow lane of northeast Delhi's Indira Vihar neighborhood, an atmosphere of celebration turned to tragedy this week. The curtains remained drawn on Wednesday at two houses facing each other—one belonging to a 21-year-old bride-to-be who survived a vicious acid attack, and the other the home of her 26-year-old neighbor, now accused of the assault.
A Family's Dreams Scattered Amidst the Attack
Inside the survivor's home, wedding outfits meticulously stitched for a joint ceremony scheduled for next Sunday lay in disarray. The young woman, who was to marry alongside her elder sister, is now undergoing intensive hospital treatment for severe injuries. "We spent a lot of our money on the weddings," the elder sister revealed, her voice heavy with despair.
Recounting the horrific incident, she described how the corrosive substance caused devastating damage. "The acid went into her eyes and throat, causing internal injuries. She threw up a lot of blood. She was also attacked with a sharp object, and needed stitches on her face," she told reporters.
A Close-Knit Family Targeted
The survivor lives with her parents, four sisters, a brother, a sister-in-law, and two nephews in a modest household. The family sustains itself by making belts, with the daughters taking on occasional tailoring work to supplement their income. Their world was shattered on Tuesday afternoon when a neighbor they had known for approximately fifteen years arrived under false pretenses.
According to family members, the accused visited around 11:30 AM, then returned an hour later wearing different clothes and carrying a bag containing two bottles. She reportedly sat on the floor and consumed an energy drink from one bottle before the attack unfolded.
The Brutal Assault Unfolds
At approximately 12:50 PM, after about twenty minutes, the neighbor allegedly produced a second bottle containing acid and hurled it directly at the bride-to-be. The assailant then attacked the young woman with a sharp object before attempting to flee the scene. She was ultimately overpowered by family members and handed over to local authorities.
The survivor's younger sister also sustained injuries while trying to intervene during the violent episode. At the corner of the house, now designated a crime scene, muskmelons intended for wedding guests lay untouched—a stark reminder of the celebration that will not proceed as planned.
Educational Aspirations and Psychological Complexities
The 21-year-old victim, a second-year MA political science student, had recently resigned from her position as a teacher at a private local school to focus on her upcoming marriage. Her sister shared the psychological trauma of witnessing the attack, stating, "I can't erase the haunting image of her screaming face from my mind." The family noted that the acrid fumes and pungent smell of the acid lingered long after the assault concluded.
Across the lane, the accused's father expressed shock and confusion about the allegations. He claimed unawareness of any purported relationship between his daughter and the survivor's fiancé, or of the impending wedding. "My daughter has been suffering from depression since she was eight. If she has done something wrong, she should be punished," he stated. The accused was reportedly studying through open learning programs to become a teacher herself.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
Police have arrested the 26-year-old woman, registering a case under Section 124 (causing grievous hurt by use of acid) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Gokalpuri police station. The investigation continues as authorities piece together the events leading to this brutal attack that has left a family traumatized and a community in shock.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about acid violence in urban areas and the devastating impact such attacks have on victims and their families, particularly when they occur within close-knit neighborhoods where relationships span decades.
