India's Supreme Court delivered a stark warning about the severe air pollution crisis gripping the national capital, describing the situation as extremely grave and urging immediate precautionary measures within the legal community.
Supreme Court's Stark Warning on Delhi's Air Quality
During court proceedings on Thursday, Justice Narasimha expressed deep concern about the deteriorating air quality in Delhi. The judge made a sharp observation, stating that the pollution situation in the national capital was "very serious" and required immediate attention and action from all stakeholders.
Shift to Virtual Hearings Recommended
In a significant move to minimize exposure to toxic air, the Supreme Court actively encouraged lawyers to utilize virtual hearing facilities instead of physical appearances. "The situation is very, very serious! Why are you all appearing here? We have virtual hearing facilities — please use them," Justice Narasimha emphasized during the proceedings, as reported by Bar and Bench.
The judge further highlighted the severe health implications, warning that "This pollution will cause permanent damage," underscoring the long-term risks associated with continued exposure to Delhi's polluted air.
Masks Deemed Insufficient Protection
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who was present in the courtroom, noted that many legal professionals had already begun taking protective measures by wearing masks. However, Justice Narasimha responded that "Even masks are not enough. They won't suffice," indicating the severity of the pollution levels that require more comprehensive solutions beyond personal protective equipment.
The court also revealed plans to discuss the matter further with the Chief Justice, suggesting that broader institutional measures might be implemented to address the health risks posed by the continuing air quality crisis in Delhi.
