Major Security Breach at Delhi Assembly Exposes Critical Vulnerabilities
A significant security breach at the Delhi Legislative Assembly has brought to light serious deficiencies in the protection of this high-security zone, which is guarded by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The incident involved a car with registration number UP26AZ8090, driven by Sarabjit Singh, aged 37, who managed to infiltrate the premises and exit without hindrance, catching security personnel off guard.
Protocol Failures and Security Lapses Under Scrutiny
What has particularly alarmed experts is not only the success of the breach but also the fact that it was executed by a non-professional individual, highlighting a lapse in vigilance. According to officials with experience in security units, standard protocol in such scenarios mandates immediate flagging, warning, and, if necessary, opening fire. However, when questioned, the on-duty personnel cited fears of collateral damage due to the presence of civilians in the area as reasons for not taking such action. Senior officials have dismissed these explanations as "frivolous," raising further concerns about accountability.
High-Level Inquiry and Security Review Underway
In response to the breach, a high-level inquiry has been launched to investigate the lapses by both CRPF and Delhi Police personnel. Sources indicate that disciplinary actions, including potential dismissals, are likely. A crucial meeting was held on Monday evening, involving CRPF leadership led by an ADG-level officer, Intelligence Bureau officials, and top Delhi Police commanders, including the Police Chief, to review the incident and formulate a corrective action plan.
As part of the security overhaul, the protection of Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta is being reassessed, with plans to upgrade his security detail to Z category, according to insider reports.
Details of the Breach and Security Setup
The Delhi Assembly complex features six gates, four of which are permanently closed. The two operational gates used for entry and exit are heavily fortified with frisking equipment and manned by approximately 30-40 personnel each from CRPF and Delhi Police. Despite this, Sarabjit Singh bypassed these secured points entirely, instead forcing his way in through one of the closed gates on the Mall Road side. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the CRPF was responsible for guarding that specific gate.
Authorities are delving into Singh's background, conducting analyses of his Call Detail Records (CDR) and Internet Protocol Detail Records (IPDR), as well as scrutinizing his social media accounts to uncover any potential motives or connections.
Terror Threats and Historical Context Heighten Concerns
The police leadership is on high alert, given that the Delhi Assembly has previously been identified as a target in terrorist plots, with intelligence inputs frequently highlighting such risks. Notably, Umar-un-Nabi, the suicide bomber involved in the Red Fort attack, had positioned an explosives-laden vehicle near the assembly in the past. A retired senior police officer emphasized that recent bomb hoaxes should have prompted thorough security assessments and identified any existing vulnerabilities.
This incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and rigorous protocol adherence to prevent future breaches in such critical locations.
