Delhi Assembly Security Breach: Three Suspects Detained After Car Rams Gate
In a startling security lapse, Delhi police on Monday detained three suspects for breaching security at the Delhi Assembly. The incident involved a vehicle breaking through a gate and placing a bouquet and garland in the official car of the Speaker before fleeing the premises.
Details of the Incident
According to officials, an SUV bearing an Uttar Pradesh registration number from the Pilibhit area entered the Assembly premises around 2 PM. The vehicle broke through Gate number 2, triggering a high alert. The driver reportedly took a sharp left turn from the Delhi University side, rammed into the main gate, and shattered boom barriers to gain entry.
The suspects placed a bouquet and a garland inside the Speaker's vehicle, which was parked in the porch of his office. Due to suspicions of explosive material, the items were later removed and kept near the porch for safety checks.
Police Response and Investigation
Multiple police teams, along with a bomb disposal squad, conducted a thorough sweep of the area. Nothing suspicious was found, but forensic teams visited the site twice to collect evidence and understand the sequence of events. The entire incident unfolded in just five to seven minutes, according to an officer.
Delhi Police Chief Satish Golchha and Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Ravindra Yadav rushed to the site to supervise the investigation. CCTV footage from the area was reviewed to reconstruct the events. Alerts were flashed to adjoining states and local police stations with details of the suspected car.
The vehicle was later spotted near the Roop Nagar police picket. The driver attempted to flee by overspeeding but was stopped and detained by alert staff. The detainees are currently being interrogated, though the motive behind the incident remains unclear at this early stage.
Security Concerns and Context
The incident has raised serious security concerns, with authorities treating it as a potential security breach. Kanchan Azad, Deputy Director and Media head to the Speaker, expressed particular concern that the car managed to break through a closed gate and remained parked inside for nearly five minutes without raising an alarm.
Gate No. 2 of the Delhi Assembly is designated as the VIP gate and is typically opened only during important events. Since it is not the main gate, security is relatively lighter there when the House is not in session. Sources indicated that only one CRPF personnel was deployed at the gate at the time.
The Assembly building has four gates, with Gate 1 being the main entrance where most CRPF personnel are stationed. Daily, a total of 22 CRPF personnel and 70 to 80 police personnel are deployed at the Vidhan Sabha.
This security breach comes shortly after bomb threats were received by the Assembly during the recently concluded budget session, adding to the gravity of the situation. Police are investigating the matter from every possible angle, including any potential links to previous threats.
