Delhi Businessman Succumbs to Injuries After Brutal Attack in Connaught Place
In a tragic case of mistaken identity that has shocked the capital, a 36-year-old businessman from Delhi has died after sustaining severe injuries in a brutal assault by three delivery executives. Shivam Gupta, a resident of Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi, passed away on January 19 after fighting for his life in hospital for over two weeks.
The Fateful Night That Changed Everything
On the intervening night of January 2 and January 3, Shivam Gupta had gone to party with friends in Delhi's upscale Connaught Place area. Little did his family know that this ordinary social outing would end in tragedy. According to police investigations and family accounts, three bike-borne men allegedly attacked Shivam in the E-Block parking area of Connaught Place, hitting him on the head with a helmet in what appears to be a case of mistaken identity.
The police have revealed that the attackers were delivery executives who had allegedly mistaken Shivam for another individual. The sequence of events, as pieced together from police questioning of the arrested suspects, suggests that the main accused had asked another man in the area for water earlier that night. When that man refused and used abusive language, the accused became angry and called two friends to help him take revenge.
A Brutal Assault and Medical Battle
The family alleges that once Shivam fell to the ground after being hit with the helmet, one of the assailants dismounted from the bike and repeatedly stomped on his chest before all three fled the scene. Shivam was left bleeding and unconscious in the parking area.
His worried parents, who had been trying to reach him after he didn't return home, eventually received the devastating news when a police officer answered his phone. "We tried calling him but his phone was switched off... when we called again, a policeman picked up the phone and identified our son," recounted Shivam's father, Anil Kant Gupta.
Shivam was initially rushed to Lady Hardinge Medical College and later transferred to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for more advanced treatment. Medical examinations revealed several skull fractures, and despite undergoing surgery on January 4, his condition continued to deteriorate. He briefly opened his eyes on January 7 but remained largely unconscious until his death on January 19.
Police Investigation and Family's Anguish
While two of the three suspects were arrested on January 6, the key accused remains at large. The police have registered a case under BNS sections 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 3(5) (common intent) and are examining CCTV footage from the area to trace the third man.
The Gupta family is devastated by their loss. "His death has left a hole that can't be filled," said Anil Kant Gupta in an emotional statement. "His mother is totally inconsolable. His sister and brother-in-law are still in shock."
Remembering Shivam Gupta
Family members remember Shivam as a gregarious and friendly person who was running a successful construction business with his brother-in-law. An avid dog lover, he had purchased a Labrador from Ireland several years ago. When his nephew developed a fear of the dog, Shivam found a shelter for the animal at a friend's house in Bulandshahr but continued to visit regularly until the dog's death in 2024.
The tragic incident highlights growing concerns about public safety in Delhi and raises questions about the accountability of delivery service providers regarding their employees' conduct. As the investigation continues, the family mourns the loss of a beloved son and brother whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
