Delhi Chef's Double Life: Hotel Worker by Night, Burglar by Day
In a startling case from the national capital, a 22-year-old man named Nilesh led a double life—working as a South Indian food chef at a prestigious five-star hotel in Dwarka during the night, while meticulously planning and executing burglaries in the daytime. This dual existence came crashing down when Delhi Police arrested him on Wednesday, unraveling a carefully orchestrated theft in southwest Delhi's RK Puram area.
The Night of the Burglary
On February 15, Nilesh reported for his regular night shift at the hotel in Dwarka. With the workload lighter than usual that evening, he seized the opportunity to slip away during the early morning hours. His target was a residence in Ambedkar Basti, located in RK Puram Sector 1. Nilesh had prior knowledge that the occupants were out of town, having learned this from the younger brother of the homeowner.
Armed with a specially designed master key capable of opening Chinese locks, he approached the house. Neighbors remained unaware as he quietly unlocked the gate, briefly struggling before gaining entry. Inside, he spent approximately 30 minutes ransacking the home, making off with cash and valuables totaling Rs 3.5 lakh. The stolen items included significant amounts of gold and silver jewellery.
Discovery and Police Investigation
The theft was discovered on February 18 when the family returned from a wedding in Rajasthan to find their home in disarray. Notably, there was no evidence of forced entry, which initially puzzled the homeowners. The owner promptly approached the police and filed a formal complaint, leading to the registration of a case.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Amit Goel stated, "Footage from a CCTV camera in the area showed a man lingering at the gate, briefly struggling before unlocking it, entering, and exiting after 30 minutes with stolen valuables." The suspect was seen fleeing the scene on a scooter, his face concealed with a shawl.
A dedicated police team was formed to identify and trace the individual. They tracked his route along Ring Road, which ultimately led them to the five-star hotel in Dwarka. Further investigation pointed directly to Nilesh, who had been employed at the establishment for the past three years.
Confrontation and Arrest
When initially questioned by police, Nilesh maintained that he was occupied with his night shifts at the hotel and denied any involvement in criminal activities. However, authorities confronted him with compelling evidence, including proof of recent financial transactions and technical surveillance data.
A crucial piece of evidence emerged from CCTV footage: Nilesh was seen wearing the same shawl at the hotel that had been reported stolen from the burglarized house. This direct link, combined with other investigative findings, left him with no room for denial.
Nilesh was formally arrested on Wednesday. A police officer involved in the case explained, "The burglary took place between 2am and 3am. Nilesh knew the younger brother of the complainant, so he was aware that the family was leaving for a wedding on Feb 14 and there would be no one home at that time."
