In a shocking incident that has raised security concerns in the national capital, a Delhi Police head constable had a narrow escape after two unidentified men robbed his service pistol and fired at him during routine patrolling duties in South West Delhi's Safdarjung Enclave area. The brazen attack occurred last week, with police officially confirming the details on Monday, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel on the ground.
Incident Details and Sequence of Events
According to police officials, the alarming episode unfolded on January 22 around 2:10 PM when Head Constable Rajkumar, who is posted at the Safdarjung Enclave police station, was conducting his regular patrol in the vicinity. The constable received information about two suspicious individuals who were reportedly consuming intoxicants near the walking track of the rose garden, prompting him to investigate immediately.
Confrontation and Violent Assault
Upon reaching the location, Head Constable Rajkumar discovered two unknown men, estimated to be between 35 and 40 years of age, hiding inside the bushes. When he attempted to question them about their activities, the situation escalated rapidly. The men allegedly responded with verbal abuse and physical aggression, launching a sudden attack on the officer.
As per the formal complaint filed by Rajkumar, one of the assailants forcibly snatched the government-issued pistol from the constable's waist. In a moment of extreme peril, the suspect then attempted to fire the weapon directly at the head constable, putting his life in immediate jeopardy.
Narrow Escape and Subsequent Chase
Displaying quick reflexes, Head Constable Rajkumar managed to push the attacker's hand at the critical moment, narrowly avoiding the gunshot. The accused individuals then issued death threats, warning him not to pursue them before making their escape. One suspect fled deeper into the bushes, while the other ran towards Outer Ring Road.
Police reports indicate that the armed suspect subsequently stopped a passing motorcyclist on the service road by brandishing the stolen pistol. He then forcibly rode pillion on the motorcycle, fleeing towards the Hauz Khas area. Despite an extensive search operation conducted by the district crime team and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), the stolen government pistol could not be recovered from the scene.
