A routine patrol on the newly opened Delhi-Dehradun Expressway turned into a life-saving mission for two Delhi Traffic Police personnel on Monday evening. Traffic Inspector Gopal Baisla and Head Constable Lal Singh became the difference between life and death for two brothers critically injured in a hit-and-run accident.
A Scene of Distress and Inaction
Around 7:52 PM on Monday, the police control room received information about a serious accident approximately 150 metres ahead of a crematorium on the stretch towards Gandhi Nagar. Inspector Baisla, posted with the Gandhi Nagar circle, and Head Constable Singh immediately diverted their patrol towards the location.
They reached the spot by 8:15 PM to find a grim scene. A crowd had gathered, but as Baisla recounted, many were busy recording videos and photos on their phones. Nobody came forward to help. Two men lay injured on the road after an unidentified vehicle had hit their motorcycle from behind. One victim was lying close to a road divider, blood oozing from his head, barely conscious and struggling to move.
The 17-Minute Decision That Made All The Difference
Seeing the severity of the injuries and the delay in ambulance arrival, the officers made a critical decision. Without waiting any longer, they took charge. Baisla asked the crowd to disperse. With Singh's help, they carefully shifted both injured men into their Police Control Room (PCR) van and embarked on a race against time to the nearest hospital.
"Every minute mattered, so I didn't wait. We knew their condition could worsen with every passing second," Inspector Baisla explained. The journey, which could have taken much longer, was completed in a swift 17 minutes, a crucial window that likely stabilized the victims' condition.
Victims Identified, Investigation Underway
The injured were identified as brothers Farhan (24) and Mohammad Kaif (25), residents of Mustafabad in northeast Delhi. Both work as AC mechanics and were travelling on their motorcycle towards Khajuri Khas when the tragedy struck.
According to police, Kaif recalls that a vehicle suddenly hit them from behind, causing them to lose control and fall hard on the road. "After that, everything became blurry for him," said Baisla. Farhan sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures, and was stated to be in critical condition. Kaif received injuries on his legs and hands.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Monika Bhardwaj confirmed the details of the incident. Police found one helmet at the accident spot, and a search for the unidentified vehicle that fled the scene is ongoing. The quick thinking and compassionate action of the two policemen have been highlighted as exemplary.
