Delhi Court Convicts Bihar BJP MLA in 2018 Celebratory Firing Death
A Delhi court has convicted Bihar Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sunil Kumar Singh for culpable homicide not amounting to murder in connection with the death of a woman during a celebratory firing incident in 2018. The court's 97-page order strongly condemned the practice of celebratory firing, stating, "The acts of celebratory firing during festivities are a scourge which often cause fatalities in our country."
Details of the Case
The incident took place on June 6, 2018, during a wedding celebration in Delhi's Lutyens' zone. Singh, who was then a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, allegedly fired into the air, and a stray bullet struck a woman, leading to her death. The prosecution argued that Singh's reckless act resulted in the loss of an innocent life, while the defense claimed the firing was accidental.
After a thorough trial, the court found Singh guilty under Section 304 Part II of the Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). The judge noted that celebratory firing is a dangerous and illegal practice that must be deterred through strict legal action. The court also observed that as a public representative, Singh should have set an example by refraining from such conduct.
Sentencing Scheduled
The court has scheduled the sentencing hearing for June 20, 2026. Singh faces a maximum punishment of up to 10 years in prison, along with a fine. The victim's family has expressed relief over the conviction, hoping it will serve as a deterrent against similar incidents in the future.
This case highlights the growing judicial scrutiny of celebratory firing, which remains a persistent issue in many parts of India despite legal prohibitions. Several states have enacted specific laws to curb the practice, but enforcement remains a challenge. Legal experts believe this conviction could set a precedent for stricter action against such offenses.
The Bihar BJP has not yet issued an official statement on the conviction. Meanwhile, political opponents have called for Singh's immediate suspension from the party, arguing that a convicted MLA should not continue in public office.
