Delhi Dating App Trap: Man Abducted, Assaulted, Robbed of Rs 7 Lakh in Nehru Place

In a shocking incident in southeast Delhi, a man was allegedly abducted, brutally assaulted, and robbed of approximately Rs 7 lakh after being lured through a dating app to meet a woman in Nehru Place. Police have swiftly acted, arresting five individuals, including a woman, in connection with this brazen crime.

How the Dating App Scam Unfolded

On Wednesday, the victim approached the police with a harrowing account. He reported that he had been contacted by a woman using the profile name "Sherry" on a popular dating application. The woman allegedly persuaded him to arrange a meeting at Nehru Place, a bustling commercial area in southeast Delhi.

When the man arrived at the designated location, he was not met by Sherry but instead confronted by three male associates of the woman. The assailants allegedly assaulted him and forcibly pushed him into a white car. According to police statements, the victim was threatened and choked until he lost consciousness, rendering him helpless.

The Robbery and Aftermath

Under severe duress, the man was allegedly coerced into transferring around Rs 7 lakh through multiple UPI transactions. After completing the illicit transfers, the perpetrators abandoned the victim in Nehru Place and fled the scene, leaving him traumatized and financially devastated.

A formal case was registered at the Kalkaji police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges for robbery, abduction for ransom, and common intention, highlighting the gravity of the offense.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Law enforcement officials launched a comprehensive investigation, analyzing CCTV footage from the area to piece together the events. This led to the identification of one of the vehicles used in the crime. By examining the digital trail, including mobile numbers, call records, intelligence inputs, automatic number plate recognition data, and FASTag records, police were able to trace a second vehicle involved.

The breakthrough came with the arrest of Rishabh Raghav, a 25-year-old cab driver, who was identified and apprehended. Subsequently, his associates were arrested from Malviya Nagar:

  • Nabojit Dey, 30, a gym and mixed martial arts trainer
  • Sanjay alias Joey, 28, a student of veterinary science
  • Harleen Kaur, 20, the woman allegedly involved in luring the victim

Additionally, Sahil Chauhan was identified as part of the criminal group and has also been nabbed by the authorities. The arrests underscore the collaborative effort between digital forensics and traditional policing methods in solving modern crimes.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with online dating platforms and the importance of exercising caution when meeting strangers. Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
