Delhi Family Arrested for Honor Killing of 19-Year-Old Daughter Over Relationship
In a shocking incident in west Delhi, police have arrested the entire family of a 19-year-old woman, Noor, for her alleged murder, which authorities describe as an honor killing. The arrests include her mother, Rabiya Khatun (55), who was taken into custody on Saturday, following the earlier arrests of her father, Mohammad Maneer (55), and brother, Meraj Ali (19), on Friday.
Details of the Crime and Arrests
The family, who lived in Tihar village in Hari Nagar, west Delhi, is accused of killing Noor because they opposed her relationship with a man from their native village in Bihar. According to police, during questioning, Rabiya Khatun confessed that she held her daughter's legs while the murder was carried out, citing concerns over the family's reputation being tarnished.
The father, Mohammad Maneer, a vegetable vendor, allegedly pinned down Noor's hands, while her brother, Meraj Ali, who worked as a helper in a private company, smothered her with a pillow. A post-mortem report confirmed smothering as the cause of death, contradicting the family's initial claims to neighbors that Noor had died of kidney failure and jaundice. Police found no medical records to support these assertions.
Investigation and Legal Actions
The murder came to light on Wednesday around 2 pm after police received a call from one of Noor's friends, who reported that the family was attempting to take the body for burial. A police team swiftly intervened, taking custody of the body and launching an investigation.
In addition to the primary charges, police have added Section 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen an offender. Authorities have also recorded the statement of the man Noor was reportedly in a relationship with, as part of the ongoing probe.
