Major Fire Incident in Northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar
A serious fire broke out in a residential building located in the bustling area of Mukherjee Nagar in northwest Delhi on Sunday evening, prompting a swift emergency response. The blaze, which ignited among household items and documents, led to the dramatic rescue of six people from the premises, including vulnerable individuals such as an elderly woman and a teenage boy.
Timeline and Emergency Response
The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received the distress call at precisely 9:43 pm, reporting flames engulfing parts of the five-storey structure. In a rapid deployment, six fire tenders carrying approximately 35 firefighters were dispatched to the scene to combat the inferno. The firefighting efforts were intense and coordinated, ultimately succeeding in extinguishing the blaze by 11:10 pm, after nearly an hour and a half of operation.
Rescue Operations and Casualties
Among those rescued from the building were Nitu Singh, aged 50; Harshit, a 17-year-old boy; Ranu Devi, an 85-year-old woman; Meena Shukla, 65; and Rohit Shukla. Tragically, one individual, identified as Pawan Kumar, aged 32, sustained significant burn injuries during the incident. He suffered from 25 to 30% burns and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. His condition remains under close observation by healthcare professionals.
Cause and Impact of the Fire
According to officials from the Delhi Fire Service, the fire originated in domestic articles and important documents stored on the first, second, and third floors of the building. The rapid spread of flames through these combustible materials posed a severe threat to the residents, highlighting the dangers of improper storage of household items in densely populated urban areas.
This incident underscores the critical importance of fire safety measures in residential buildings, especially in older structures that may lack modern fire prevention systems. Authorities are likely to investigate further to determine if any negligence contributed to the outbreak and to recommend preventive actions to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
