Wedding Celebration Turns Tragic in Delhi Crash
A joyous wedding celebration turned into tragedy in the early hours of Sunday when a groom returning from his reception lost control of his Mercedes, resulting in one death and two severe injuries on Nelson Mandela Marg.
The accused driver, identified as 29-year-old Shivam Arora, was employed as a software engineer with an American multinational technology company. He was traveling with his wife and elder brother to their Karol Bagh residence from a hotel in Vasant Kunj when the accident occurred around 2:33 am.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to police reports, the luxury vehicle lost balance due to a diversion on the road outside Ambience Mall. The speeding Mercedes hit a divider before veering onto the sidewalk where three restaurant employees were waiting for an autorickshaw.
The car struck all three men before finally crashing into a pole. Police confirmed that no traces of intoxication were found in Arora's blood sample during preliminary investigation.
Victims and Aftermath
The three victims, all employees of French bakery-café chain Paul at Ambience Mall, were immediately rushed to hospital. Southwest Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Goel provided details about the injured persons aged 23, 25, and 35.
Tragically, 23-year-old Rohit Singh from Uttarakhand's Chamoli district succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Singh worked as a chef and was the sole breadwinner for his family. He lived in a rented room in Munirka.
The other two victims, identified as Kapil (35) and Lalit (25), are currently undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the city. Both remain in serious condition.
Legal Action and Charges
Delhi Police have arrested Shivam Arora and charged him under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita:
- Section 106 (causing death by negligence)
- Section 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others)
- Section 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way)
Investigators noted that the car involved in the accident was borrowed from Arora's friend. The road where the incident occurred leads in two directions - one towards Munirka and the other to a U-turn, making it a potentially hazardous spot during high-speed driving.
The case continues to be investigated as the community mourns the loss of a young life and two families pray for the recovery of their injured loved ones.
