Armed Heist Rocks Upscale Golf Links in Delhi, Family Held Captive
In a shocking incident that has rattled the upscale enclave of Golf Links in Lutyens' Delhi, a group of six armed burglars executed a daring evening heist on Thursday, holding a prominent liquor firm owner and his family captive before making off with a substantial haul of cash and jewellery. The crime, which unfolded around 7 pm, is believed to have been orchestrated with the assistance of a recently hired domestic help who had not undergone police verification.
Precision Strike: Masked Intruders Seize Control
According to police reports, the burglars gained entry into the victim's home after the domestic help allegedly opened the door. Once inside, the masked men moved with alarming precision, immediately seizing control of the household. The family of four, which included a child, was held captive and subjected to severe threats. Initial investigations suggest the burglars leveraged the child's presence to ensure total compliance, demanding keys to the household safe and all visible valuables.
During a tense standoff lasting approximately 15 minutes, the intruders, armed with break-in tools and rods, ransacked the premises. Police sources indicate that family members resisted and put up a brave fight, leading to a scuffle where they were roughed up. It remains unconfirmed whether they were tied up during the ordeal.
Swift Escape and Massive Police Response
After forcing the family to surrender an undisclosed but significant amount of cash and jewellery, the burglars quickly packed the loot into bags. The six suspects, along with the domestic help, then fled the scene. Police were alerted around 8 pm, prompting senior officers, including the joint commissioner and DCP of the area, to rush to the spot, where they found the house thoroughly ransacked.
Investigation revealed that no police verification had been conducted for the domestic help, who is suspected to have gained employment using a forged identity. Authorities are attempting to identify him with the help of CCTV footage, as the family did not possess his documents like Aadhaar or any photograph—these were reportedly in a phone that the burglars took with them.
CCTV footage from the residence and surrounding streets confirmed the presence of masked men loitering in the area shortly before the strike. Preliminary digital tracking and witness statements suggest the group fled with ease, likely heading toward ISBT and the local railway station to blend in with crowds and facilitate a quick exit from the city.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
In response, police mobilised a massive effort, deploying six specialised teams, including the crime branch, to track the suspects. On Friday, investigators reconstructed an "electronic route" using a network of CCTV cameras across the district to establish the escape route used by the gang. A case has been registered under sections of armed robbery and dacoity at Tughlaq Road police station. While the suspects remain at large, police have expressed confidence in their imminent capture.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the upscale locality, with police stepping up patrolling in the area. A police officer noted that the family has been left traumatised by the ordeal. In light of this, authorities have issued a fresh advisory, reiterating the non-negotiable necessity of formal police verification for all domestic staff to prevent such crimes in the future.
