NEW DELHI: A tragic accident on Friday night claimed the lives of two childhood friends returning home after watching the Delhi Capitals versus KKR IPL match. The incident occurred around 11:30 pm near the Signature Bridge flyover in northeast Delhi's Khajuri Khas area.
Details of the Accident
The two men were riding a Bullet motorcycle when a speeding silver Maruti Celerio rammed them from behind near the service lane close to Bhajanpura metro station. The impact threw both riders onto the road, with the pillion rider flung 15 meters away. The car reportedly spun around three times before crashing into a divider. Both victims were declared brought dead at the hospital.
Victims and Driver Identified
The deceased were identified as Rohit Kashyap (31) and Hemant Sharma (33), both residents of Karawal Nagar. The driver, Himanshu (27), a lawyer, was beaten by locals who alleged he was driving over 80 kmph and appeared intoxicated. Police confirmed his arrest and seizure of the vehicle.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Ashish Kumar Mishra stated, "The accused driver has been arrested, and the offending vehicle has been seized. His blood sample has been sent for testing." Police are verifying whether Himanshu, a resident of Holambi Kalan, is a practicing lawyer. The seized car bore a Delhi High Court Bar Association sticker and a band tie on the rear-view mirror.
Similar Incident Last Month
This accident mirrors a hit-and-run in central Delhi's Ashoka Road last month, where two cousins aged 20 and 14 were killed while returning home after watching an IPL match on a motorcycle.
Witness Accounts and Allegations
A 20-year-old local resident noted, "Neither of the bikers were wearing helmets and had suffered severe head injuries." A 45-year-old woman added, "One of the two men was still a little conscious when we saw him. He kept calling out to us."
The family of the deceased alleged police negligence, claiming a PCR vehicle took 20-25 minutes to arrive. Hemant's brother Harkesh alleged, "Hemant was still breathing a little when locals tried to keep him in the van. The cops refused until they forcibly placed him in the vehicle."
A senior police officer countered, stating the first call was received at 11:26 pm, the second at 11:27 pm. "The PCR reached by 11:35 pm, and by 11:42 pm, they moved both injured to the hospital."
Legal Action
A case has been registered under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the BNS at the Khajuri Khas police station.
