Additional Sessions Judge Saurabh Partap Singh Laler on Wednesday denied bail to Deepak Vats, who was arrested for allegedly honey trapping a judicial officer and cheating her of ₹52 lakh. The case came to light after the victim's maid filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the police.
Background of the Case
The judicial officer, a woman, met the accused through a dating application. Over time, Vats allegedly gained her trust and then blackmailed her using compromising material, leading to the extortion of a significant amount of money. The victim, fearing social stigma, initially did not report the matter.
FIR and Investigation
The maid of the judicial officer filed an e-FIR with the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police's Special Cell. The FIR was registered under sections related to cheating, impersonation, and criminal conspiracy. Following the registration, an investigation was launched, leading to the arrest of Deepak Vats.
Court Proceedings
During the bail hearing, the prosecution argued that Vats had systematically planned the honey trap and extorted money from the victim. The court, after hearing both sides, observed that the allegations were serious and that the accused could tamper with evidence or influence witnesses if released on bail. Consequently, the bail plea was rejected.
Modus Operandi
According to the police, Vats created a fake profile on the dating app and initiated conversations with the judicial officer. After establishing a relationship, he recorded their private moments and later used the footage to blackmail her. He demanded money repeatedly, and the victim transferred ₹52 lakh over several months.
Legal Implications
This case highlights the growing menace of honey trapping and cyber extortion. Legal experts emphasize the need for awareness and caution while using online platforms. The denial of bail underscores the court's stance against such crimes, especially when committed against public officials.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police are probing whether Vats had any accomplices. The judicial officer has been advised to cooperate fully with the authorities to ensure a thorough probe.
