A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his friend near Khajuri Khas Metro Station in northeast Delhi following a dispute that erupted while the two were consuming cannabis, police said on Thursday.
Arrest and Background
The accused, identified as Shifayat, a resident of Chand Bagh in northeast Delhi, was taken into custody in connection with the murder of Azharuddin (40), a waiter. Azharuddin's body was recovered on June 8 near the metro station.
According to a senior police officer, Azharuddin worked as a waiter and also lived in Chand Bagh. After the body was discovered, crime and forensic teams conducted an inspection at the scene. The body was subsequently sent for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigation and Arrest
During the investigation, police analyzed technical evidence and followed up on various leads, which ultimately led to the identification and arrest of Shifayat. The accused was interrogated and reportedly confessed to the crime.
Shifayat revealed that he and Azharuddin had met near the metro station on June 5 and consumed cannabis together. An argument broke out between them over a minor issue, during which Azharuddin allegedly slapped him. The accused stated that the two later started leaving the area when Azharuddin attempted to climb over a wall and fell, sustaining injuries.
Harboring resentment over the earlier altercation, Shifayat allegedly attacked Azharuddin repeatedly with a stone piece, inflicting fatal injuries. After the murder, the accused covered the body with bricks in an attempt to conceal the crime and fled from the spot.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have confirmed that further investigation into the case is underway. Authorities are working to gather more evidence and ascertain any additional details surrounding the incident.
This tragic event highlights the potential dangers of substance abuse and unresolved conflicts. The victim, a waiter, leaves behind a family and community in shock. The accused will face legal proceedings as the case progresses.
