Delhi Police Heighten Security Measures for Holi Celebrations
In preparation for the Holi festival on Wednesday, the Delhi Police have placed the city on high alert, mobilizing more than 15,000 personnel to ensure law and order and enhance road safety. A senior police officer confirmed that teams have been strategically stationed at 134 major intersections across the capital, with a primary objective to apprehend drunken drivers and prevent accidents during the festive period.
Comprehensive Traffic Management Plan Implemented
The Delhi Traffic Police has rolled out an extensive traffic management strategy aimed at maintaining public safety and ensuring smooth vehicular movement. Specialized teams are positioned at key junctions and accident-prone areas to monitor a range of violations, including speeding, reckless driving, red-light jumping, triple riding on two-wheelers, riding without helmets, and performing stunts. According to police statements, serious infractions such as drunken driving could lead to the suspension of driving licenses for a minimum of three months, as per guidelines from the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Gupta emphasized, "Keeping the Holi festival in mind, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued a detailed traffic management plan. Our staff are deployed at around 134 major intersections, with personnel present across key areas under the supervision of senior officers. Our primary focus is to prevent drunken driving and curb all traffic violations through appropriate action."
Strict Enforcement and Public Accountability
The police have warned that offences like using mobile phones while driving, dangerous driving, and speeding will result in immediate license seizure and suspension. Furthermore, vehicle owners will be held accountable if their vehicles are operated by minors or unauthorized individuals, reinforcing the commitment to road safety. The officer added that the police will also take cognisance of traffic violations reported via social media platforms, leveraging public participation in enforcement efforts.
This heightened security and traffic control initiative underscores the Delhi Police's dedication to safeguarding citizens during Holi, combining rigorous patrols with proactive measures to mitigate risks associated with the celebrations.
