In a significant enforcement action, Delhi Police impounded an SUV that had accumulated Rs 83,000 in pending traffic fines. The vehicle was intercepted during a routine check in the national capital, revealing a staggering 47 unpaid challans dating back to 2020.
Details of the Impoundment
The SUV, a white Toyota Fortuner, was stopped by traffic police near the India Gate area on Tuesday evening. Upon verification, the officer discovered that the vehicle had multiple pending challans for various traffic violations, including overspeeding, red light jumping, and illegal parking. The total amount of unpaid fines amounted to Rs 83,000.
The owner, a resident of South Delhi, was present at the time of the impoundment. The police seized the vehicle under the Motor Vehicles Act and issued a notice to the owner to clear all pending dues within a stipulated time frame. Failure to do so may result in further legal action, including the possibility of the vehicle being auctioned.
Rising Traffic Violations in Delhi
This incident highlights the growing issue of traffic violations in Delhi. According to recent data, over 1.5 crore challans were issued in 2023 alone, with a significant portion remaining unpaid. The Delhi Traffic Police has been ramping up enforcement measures, including the use of automated challan systems and increased roadside checks, to ensure compliance.
Officials stated that impounding vehicles with high pending fines is a deterrent strategy to encourage timely payment of penalties. They also urged citizens to regularly check their vehicle's challan status and clear dues promptly to avoid inconvenience.
Steps for Vehicle Release
To retrieve the impounded SUV, the owner must:
- Visit the designated traffic police office with all relevant documents.
- Pay the total pending fine amount of Rs 83,000 along with any additional impoundment fees.
- Obtain a clearance certificate from the traffic police.
- Present the certificate at the impound lot to release the vehicle.
The Delhi Traffic Police has also set up an online portal where citizens can check pending challans and make payments electronically, reducing the need for physical visits.
This action serves as a stern reminder for all vehicle owners to adhere to traffic rules and settle fines promptly to avoid such penalties.
