The Delhi Police have apprehended a 70-year-old man who had been on the run for 12 years after allegedly chopping off the thumb of an event manager during a financial dispute. The incident dates back to 2012, when the accused, identified as Ram Swaroop, attacked the victim over a monetary disagreement.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the event manager, whose identity has not been disclosed, had a financial conflict with Ram Swaroop. The dispute escalated, leading Swaroop to sever the manager's thumb using a sharp weapon. Following the attack, the accused fled the scene and remained untraceable for over a decade.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The case was reopened recently as part of a crackdown on long-pending warrants. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Delhi Police's Crime Branch tracked down Swaroop to a hideout in the outskirts of the city. He was taken into custody without resistance.
Legal Proceedings
The accused has been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those pertaining to grievous hurt. He was produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody. The police are continuing their investigation to ascertain if Swaroop had any accomplices.
This arrest highlights the persistence of law enforcement agencies in bringing fugitives to justice, even years after the crime. The victim, who suffered permanent disability due to the loss of his thumb, has expressed relief at the development.
