In a major crackdown on school bus safety, the Delhi traffic police have issued 69 challans to vehicles found violating norms. The enforcement drive, conducted across the city, targeted buses for lacking essential safety equipment and overloading.
Safety Equipment Missing
During inspections, officials discovered that many school buses were not equipped with mandatory fire extinguishers, first aid kits, or emergency exits. In several cases, the buses were found to be overcrowded, with students standing in aisles. "Such negligence puts children's lives at risk," said a senior traffic police officer.
Legal Action Taken
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, the police issued challans for various offenses including driving without valid permits, not displaying route numbers, and failing to maintain vehicle fitness. The total fines collected amounted to over Rs 1.5 lakh. Authorities have warned that repeat offenders could face suspension of their permits.
Parental Concerns
Parents expressed relief over the action but demanded stricter monitoring. "We entrust our children's safety to these drivers. It's alarming to see such lapses," said Ritu Sharma, a parent. The traffic police have announced that surprise checks will continue throughout the academic year.
Recommendations for Schools
Officials have advised school administrations to conduct regular audits of their transport fleets and ensure compliance with safety norms. Training programs for drivers on emergency procedures are also being encouraged. The Delhi government is considering introducing GPS tracking and CCTV cameras in all school buses to enhance safety.
The crackdown comes after a series of accidents involving school vehicles, prompting authorities to take stringent action. With the new academic session underway, the police aim to send a strong message against negligence.
