Major Fire Breaks Out at Shoe Factory in Delhi's Narela Industrial Zone
A significant fire incident occurred on Friday at a shoe manufacturing unit located in the Bhorgarh industrial area of Outer Delhi's Narela region. The blaze, which erupted in the early morning hours, required an extensive nine-hour firefighting operation involving nearly 90 personnel from the Delhi Fire Service before it was finally brought under control.
Factory Operating Without Mandatory Safety Clearance
According to fire department officials, the factory was operating without the legally required no-objection certificate (NOC), which is essential for ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Abhilash Kumar Malik, who led the firefighting operation, confirmed this critical violation.
The factory did not possess an NOC and had only one escape route available, with no fire-fighting equipment installed inside the premises, Malik stated, highlighting the severe safety lapses that contributed to the incident's severity.
Challenging Firefighting Conditions
The fire department received the initial alert about the blaze at approximately 7:45 AM, prompting the immediate deployment of twenty-four fire tenders to the industrial site. The factory, which manufactured various shoe components including soles, presented particularly challenging conditions for firefighters.
The building featured a ground-plus-two-floor structure with an additional basement level. All floors were densely packed with raw materials, finished products, manufacturing machinery, and packaging materials, creating what fire officials described as an extremely high fire load.
AK Malik explained that the limited evacuation pathway posed significant challenges to firefighting teams, while the presence of highly combustible materials acted as a catalyst, causing rapid fire spread throughout the building structure.
Combustible Materials Intensify Blaze
A Delhi Fire Service official detailed how the intensity of the fire was dramatically increased by the dense accumulation of manufacturing materials including rubber, foam, adhesives, and various packaging components. This combination generated thick, choking smoke and extreme heat conditions that severely reduced visibility and slowed firefighting progress.
Another complicating factor was the building's structural connectivity. On the second floor, an open gate connected the factory to adjacent structures, raising legitimate concerns that the fire might spread to neighboring industrial units.
Timely Intervention Prevents Wider Damage
Despite these challenges, coordinated efforts by multiple fire teams successfully prevented the flames from extending beyond the affected factory premises. The fire had almost reached adjacent buildings through the connecting passage on the second floor, but it was contained in time, a fire officer confirmed, acknowledging the critical timing of the intervention.
Visual documentation of the incident showed massive plumes of thick, dark smoke billowing from the factory structure, visible from considerable distances throughout the industrial area.
Investigation and Ownership Details
Local police authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the precise cause of the fire outbreak. Preliminary information indicates the factory belongs to a resident of Pitampura, another area within Delhi.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported from this industrial fire incident, though the material damage appears substantial given the duration and intensity of the blaze. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about fire safety compliance in industrial areas and the critical importance of proper safety certifications and equipment.
