Delhi Braces for Major Traffic Disruptions on April 4 Due to Dual Events

Commuters in central Delhi are set to encounter significant traffic restrictions and congestion on Thursday, April 4, as the city hosts two major events simultaneously. The Delhi Traffic Police has issued advisories warning of disruptions due to an IPL cricket match at Arun Jaitley Stadium and a large-scale teachers' rally at Ram Leela Ground.

Morning Traffic Impact from Teachers' Rally

Traffic is expected to be affected from the early morning hours due to a rally organized by the Teachers Federation of India at Ram Leila Ground. The event is scheduled to take place between 10 am and 5 pm, with peak movement of participants anticipated from 8 am onwards. This will prompt traffic regulation in the surrounding areas to manage the influx.

According to police advisories, restrictions may be enforced at key locations including Kamla Market roundabout, Delhi Gate, Ajmeri Gate, and Minto Road if required. Heavy and commercial vehicles face potential prohibitions on stretches such as Daryaganj to Delhi Gate Chowk and Delhi Gate Chowk to Guru Nanak Chowk on JLN Marg.

Afternoon and Evening Congestion from IPL Match

Later in the day, traffic conditions are likely to worsen with an IPL 2026 match between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians at Arun Jaitley Stadium. The match is scheduled from 3 pm to 7:30 pm, with increased vehicular movement expected from early afternoon as spectators arrive at the venue.

Diversions and restrictions may be imposed based on real-time conditions on key arterial roads including JLN Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar (BSZ) Marg, Asaf Ali Road, Chaman Lal Marg, Ajmeri Gate, and Minto Road. Additional prohibitions may affect heavy vehicles on the ITO to Delhi Gate route via BSZ Marg.

Comprehensive Parking Restrictions and Alternatives

Parking restrictions will remain in force across both event zones throughout the day. No parking will be allowed on JLN Marg, Asaf Ali Road, and both carriageways of Chaman Lal Marg, with violating vehicles subject to towing.

For the teachers' rally, visitors have been advised to park at Mata Sundari College. Buses will drop passengers at Delhi Gate and be stationed at Rajghat, with no bus movement permitted beyond Delhi Gate.

For the IPL match, parking will be available at Mata Sundari Road, Rajghat Power House Road, and Velodrome Road, along with park-and-ride facilities. No parking will be allowed near the stadium except for vehicles with designated parking labels. Spectator entry to different gates of the stadium will be routed via BSZ Marg and JLN Marg.

Traffic Police Recommendations for Commuters

The Delhi Traffic Police advises commuters to:

  • Plan alternative routes in advance to avoid congested areas
  • Use public transportation where possible
  • Follow real-time traffic updates through official channels
  • Adhere to all posted restrictions and diversion signs
  • Allow extra travel time for journeys through central Delhi

Both events are expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators, creating challenging traffic conditions throughout the day. The traffic police will deploy additional personnel to manage the situation and minimize disruptions to the extent possible.
