Delhi Woman Dies After Years of Marital Abuse, CBI Probe Sought

NEW DELHI: In a tragic incident that has shocked the capital, a woman married into a prominent industrialist family was found dead at her upscale Vasant Vihar residence, with police documents revealing a harrowing pattern of alleged abuse, intimidation, and systematic pressure to remain silent over several years.

Years of Alleged Abuse and Intimidation

The First Information Report (FIR) registered by police paints a disturbing picture of sustained mistreatment that began early in the marriage and escalated over time. According to the complaint filed by the victim's mother, the woman faced prolonged mental and physical abuse and was deliberately isolated from social events by her husband and in-laws.

One of the most shocking incidents detailed in the FIR dates back to February-March 2011, when the victim was allegedly dragged from the first floor of the family home and assaulted while she was pregnant. The husband and mother-in-law were identified as the perpetrators in this violent episode.

Following this incident, relatives from Howrah intervened, prompting the in-laws to apologize and promise that such behavior would not be repeated. However, the mother claims the abuse resumed just two to three years later, continuing the cycle of violence.

The Turning Point and Temporary Separation

The situation reached a critical juncture approximately one month after the birth of the couple's child. The woman allegedly discovered evidence of her husband's extramarital affair, which prompted her parents to bring her and her infant son back to their family home in Howrah.

A year later, the in-laws traveled to Howrah to meet the woman's family, urging them not to "speak of the matter in society" while promising to take better care of her. Eventually, the woman returned to Delhi with her husband after he provided a written assurance that he would stop all violent behavior.

Final Days and Tragic Outcome

The control and surveillance continued even after her return to Delhi. The FIR states that the husband maintained "multiple locks" on his phone to restrict her access. In April 2024, while her husband was abroad, she managed to access his device again and discovered obscene content, leading to another confrontation.

The final tragedy unfolded on November 25, when the woman called her mother around 7:30 AM, revealing that she had quarreled with her husband over their son's mobile phone. Subsequent calls from concerned family members went unanswered throughout the morning.

When family members tried to reach her, the mother-in-law claimed she was at the airport, while the husband stated he was returning from the gym. Around noon, the family received the devastating news that the woman had been taken to a hospital where she was declared dead.

Aftermath and Legal Proceedings

Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide in connection with the death. The victim's mother has now demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her daughter's death, expressing dissatisfaction with the current investigation.

When approached for comments, the lawyer representing the industrialist's family did not respond to queries from media representatives. The case continues to develop as authorities piece together the events leading to the tragic death of the young mother.
