In a bizarre case that has captured public attention, Deoria police on Tuesday announced the arrest of a roadside momo vendor and his mother, claiming to have solved an unusual crime where a minor boy allegedly exchanged jewellery worth approximately Rs 85 lakh for "unlimited free momos." The incident, which unfolded in the Rampur Karkhana police station area, involved a class 7 student being enticed by the promise of complimentary fast food.
Police Action and Arrest Details
Superintendent of Police, Deoria, Sanjeev Suman, revealed that the accused were apprehended near Dumri Tiraha on Tuesday night. Following their arrest, intensive interrogation led investigators to the suspects' residence, where a significant cache of stolen silver ornaments was discovered. The recovered items included various traditional pieces such as anklets, payal, hand palani, and toe rings, highlighting the substantial value involved in this peculiar exchange.
Discovery of Hidden Jewellery
Further revelations emerged during the investigation, as one of the accused disclosed that several gold ornaments had been buried underground. Police teams subsequently excavated these items, adding to the total recovery. This meticulous follow-up underscores the thoroughness of the police operation in tracing the stolen goods and piecing together the full extent of the crime.
How the Case Unfolded
The case came to light when a temple priest reported that his 12-year-old son had been lured by the two accused into bringing gold and silver jewellery from home. In return, the boy was promised unlimited free momos from their roadside fast-food joint. The incident was discovered after the priest's wife and sister noticed their jewellery missing from a cupboard and questioned family members. Upon inquiry, the minor confessed to his father about the arrangement with the vendors, prompting the police complaint.
Ongoing Investigations and Legal Steps
All recovered ornaments have been seized by authorities, and further legal proceedings are currently underway. Police officials have indicated that other aspects of the case, including the complete jewellery trail and potential involvement of additional individuals, remain under active investigation. This case has drawn widespread attention due to its unusual modus operandi, involving the exploitation of a minor through the allure of free food, raising concerns about child safety and criminal tactics in local communities.
