A shocking case of murder and suicide has come to light in the national capital, leaving a family devastated and the local community in West Delhi's Anand Parbat area in a state of shock. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, involved a 44-year-old man who allegedly strangled his wife before taking his own life.
Police Break Open Door to Grisly Discovery
The sequence of events began to unfold when the Anand Parbat police station received a PCR call at approximately 5:26 pm on January 2, 2026. The call was made by the man's brother-in-law, alerting authorities to a concerning situation. A police team swiftly reached the couple's residence located in Nai Basti.
Officers found a room locked from the inside. With no response from within, they were forced to cut open the door to gain entry. Inside, they discovered a harrowing scene. A 37-year-old woman, identified as Jyoti, was found lying dead on the floor. Her husband, Jai Prakash, aged 44, was found hanging.
Family Points to Long Battle with Depression
Initial inquiries by the police revealed crucial background information provided by grieving family members. Relatives of both the deceased stated that Jai Prakash had been suffering from depression for a prolonged period of 13 years. This detail has become a central point in understanding the possible motive behind the extreme act.
"An inquiry revealed that Jai Prakash closed and locked the room from inside and killed his wife by strangling her. He then hanged himself," explained a senior police officer involved in the investigation.
Investigation Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
The police have confirmed that no suicide note was recovered from the scene. Furthermore, there were no signs of external or forced entry into the house, ruling out the possibility of an outsider's involvement at this stage. The family members have also not alleged any foul play, corroborating the initial findings.
Given the absence of any eyewitness to the tragic event, the police have proceeded with legal formalities. A case has been officially registered under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The bodies of Jyoti and Jai Prakash were subsequently shifted to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital for post-mortem examination as the investigation continues to piece together the final moments leading to the tragedy.
The incident has cast a pall over the neighbourhood, highlighting the severe consequences of untreated mental health issues and the silent crises that can unfold within households.
